Claimant Prosecuted for Filling False Claim For Federal Compensation Benefits

United States v Collins, Crim. No. 2:21-cr-00066 (D. Me. Oct. 28, 2021).

This was brought to our attention by Taylor Lombardo who is with the Mercer Law Firm in New Orleans, La. and a former member of the Loyola Maritime Law Journal.

As a result of surveillance by the compensation carrier for the employer, the claimant seeking Federal Longshore Compensation benefits was indicted and convicted of making false statements for the purpose of obtaining benefits under the LSHWCA. Further information can be obtained through PACER with the criminal docket number referenced above. It is rare the U.S. attorney in any jurisdiction has prosecuted a claimant for this purpose.
